Sunrise sessions aren’t the most common choice when clients book their 30A photo session. Understandably, many people aren’t eager to wake up early enough to be dressed + camera-ready before the sun comes up, especially while on vacation. Sunrise also isn’t typically my first recommendation here along 30A, as our beaches face southwest, making sunset lighting generally better positioned, meaning it's a little more flattering.
While sunset sessions tend to be ideal for both lighting + client preference, there are certain situations where I actually recommend, or even require, a sunrise session.
- Wind is a concern. Early morning winds are usually much calmer than evenings, making sunrise ideal for smoother hair + a more relaxed experience.
- Families have young children. Sunrise sessions are ideal for kids with earlier bedtimes, allowing them to be well-rested, happy, + energized for photos, rather than overtired at sunset after a full day of playing in the Florida sun + water.
- Nap schedules are unpredictable. Travel often disrupts routines, + sunrise sessions can fit more naturally into a family’s day.
- Privacy is a priority. Sunrise offers quieter, more intimate sessions with mostly empty beaches - perfect for couples or anyone that is more camera-shy.
- Heat + humidity are a factor. Summer mornings on 30A are cooler + more comfortable, with softer light + less intense humidity.
- Softer color edits are desired. Sunrise sessions naturally produce more gentle pink + blue hues, resulting in a softer, more pastel color palette overall. In contrast, sunset lighting tends to be warmer + more golden, often yielding richer yellow tones.
- Sunset availability is limited. During peak season, sunrise may be the best option if a client's sunset session is rained out + my schedule is fully booked for the week for evenings.
While sunset sessions remain the most popular, sunrise sessions often deliver the calmest experience + some of the prettiest natural coloring. We even occasionally spot some fun wildlife - like dolphins, sea turtles, + blue herons early in the morning!
